Endangered languages
Languages are constantly evolving. “Knowledgeful” and “dictionary attack” made it into the Oxford English Dictionary this month. The Académie Française, bastion of the French language, has published eight editions of its dictionary since 1694. New words added in 1994 included hypermarché and franglais.
While an estimated 1 billion people speak English as a first or second language and 360 million speak French, some languages are not so lucky.
In a bid to preserve these dying languages National Geographic has just published an online map and YouTube channel that allows you to search for and listen to an endangered language.
